On November 27, 2025, Fulai introduced a new-generation tactile sensing system integrating flexible materials, chips, algorithms and large models at a product launch and investor event in Shanghai. Centered on chip-sensor integration, the upgrade advances robotic touch from raw-signal acquisition toward local processing and intelligent recognition.
From detecting touch to understanding touch
Conventional tactile systems mainly capture pressure or resistance changes, while subsequent computation is performed by an external controller. The third-generation product moves signal processing closer to the sensor, enabling rapid processing at the fingertip or end effector and reducing transmission and host-decision latency.
Public reports refer to the tactile processing unit as a TPU. In this context TPU means Tactile Processing Unit: an edge-computing component for tactile data that supports rapid feedback so the robot can determine not only whether contact occurred but also properties and state of the contacted object.
Three core directions for tactile intelligence
Chip-sensor integration: tighter integration of signal-processing chips and flexible sensors moves computation to the sensing edge and shortens the path from acquisition to response. Local processing can support faster correction when an object begins to slip.
Algorithm enablement: texture recognition, compliance perception and slip detection convert electrical signals into physical properties that a robot can use for object recognition, grasp planning and safe interaction.
Full-area touch: coverage expands from fingertips to finger pads, palms, the back of the hand and other critical robot areas, creating a more complete tactile safety boundary while maintaining conformability and multi-region sensing.
Coordinated advances in materials, devices and algorithms
The third-generation product is a system-level integration of material formulation, flexible structure, acquisition chips, algorithms and data applications rather than a single sensor-parameter update. Flexible materials conform to curved surfaces, sensing cells acquire contact, chips process signals and algorithms turn the data into control and cognition inputs.
This integrated approach can reduce implementation complexity for robot manufacturers, although every dexterous-hand structure, interface and task still requires adaptation. The product must continue through customer validation, application testing and scaled-delivery verification.
Embodied intelligence and broader applications
Beyond dexterous hands and humanoid robots, the capabilities may support industrial inspection, intelligent wearables, healthcare and human-machine interaction. Fulai states that it will continue building tactile solutions around flexible materials, sensors, chips and algorithms.
